Best Albums of 2011 (1-4.)
#1 Ólafur Arnalds: Living Room Songs
When I was listening all of my nominees for the best album of 2011, I wasn’t sure about the winner. But when I heard Ólafur’s songs again, there was no question inside. With those I survived the period of writing my thesis and last week when I was preparing myself for a serious exam. I always feel the calm and the piece inside, and the miracle that Ólafur can make with the piano tunes is memorable and stunning as always.
Listen: Lag fyrir Ömmu
#2 Smith & Burrows: Funny Looking Angels
Tom Smith is like a god for me, with the greatest and most wonderful voice I’ve ever heard. When in 2011 he collaborated with Andy Burrows, I already knew that I won’t care what they are doing, it’ll probably okay for me. Well, this is a winter/Christmas album so I have to admit I haven’t been listening to it since the end of Christmas (and because there’s no snow outside, I don’t feel the proper mood for it) but still, it’s a nice album, and perfect for the winter holidays. The covers are wonderful, and the own songs just hit me.
Listen: This Ain’t New Jersey
#3 The Wombats: This Modern Glitch
Absolutely last minute arrivals, I wouldn’t have thought that I’ll have a new favourite in the last days of the year. But after only like three days I felt “fuck yeah, this rocks!” and I just put it to the list. Then I moved it always higher and I could only stop at the third place. I love the vocals, the powerful songs which makes me jump, the whole feelgood atmosphere.. I’m so glad I’ve discovered them just in time for this list.
Listen: Schumacher The Champagne
#4 Coldplay: Mylo Xyloto
As I said it many times, I wasn’t that impressed and I was a little bit disappointed with this new mainstream thing but whatever, they are still one of the most important bands in my life. I’m jumping and dancing during the half of the songs from this album, they are full of energy and cool tunes, but I’m not satisfied with the slower tracks, they are just not good enough as I’ve expected. But at least Mylo Xyloto is colorful like the album cover.
Listen: Hurts Like Heaven
Song of the day —> Smith & Burrows: When The Thames Froze
